RACING

The Walgett Races have been a tradition since 1877, with the annual meet named the P.J. O'Brien Memorial Race Day since 2005 to honor Paddy O'Brien's contributions to racing in the area. Since inception they have been a cornerstone of country racing in New South Wales, drawing locals and visitors alike to the heart of the western plains.

Traditionally a celebration of community and sporting excellence, the event has long showcased the region’s finest thoroughbreds. The races are known for their quality, with significant participation from local trainers and horses, contributing to a competitive and entertaining day.

In recent years the Walgett Jockey Club host one annual race meeting each June, delivering a fiercely competitive race program set against the charm of the bush.
