Why are the Walgett Races the best day out west?

Because there’s simply nothing like the Walgett Races. It’s the people, the atmosphere, and the buzz that comes with a genuinely great day of country racing. Everyone turns up in good spirits, the community feels alive, and the racing is always top‑notch. It’s the kind of day that reminds you why the west is special.

How long have you been coming to the Walgett Races?

I’ve been coming for 57 years—and I’ve loved every single one of them. It’s become a tradition, a family connection, and a yearly highlight all rolled into one.

Best horse you’ve ever seen race here?

Hot and Handy—a horse that always turned heads and knew how to put on a show. One of the real standouts over the years.

What’s your race day drink of choice?

Coke.

Who picks the winners in your group?

Me.

What’s the secret to a winning bet?

Study the form. There’s no magic trick—just doing the homework and knowing what you’re looking at.

What’s your favourite race day memory?

Winning the Walgett Picnic Races on Beau Riley will always stand out. There’s nothing quite like riding home a winner in front of your own crowd. That feeling stays with you.

What makes the Walgett Races special?

For me, it’s bookmaking in my hometown. There’s pride in being part of the action and contributing to an event that means so much to our community.
