READ MORE BELOW… (and his top betting tip).
How long have you been coming to the Walgett Races?
I have been coming to the Walgett Races for as long as I remember (since the 80s).
What’s your favourite race day memory?
The old man was a timekeeper and a judge and I remember helping him from a very young age putting up the horses and jockeys on the board above the secretary’s office for each race.
What makes the Walgett Races special?
I think it brings so many people together for a great day of socialising and racing. It has grown in reputation to an event that people don’t want to miss and are happy to jump off a tractor in the middle of sowing to enjoy.
Best horse you’ve ever seen race here?
Plectrum. It won 2 Walgett Cups in a row.
What’s your race day drink of choice?
Beer or Rum and Coke if I’m trying to catch up.
What’s the secret to a winning bet?
The recent form of the horse over the distance of the race as well as how it looks in the parade arena.
What makes country racing better than city racing?
It is the grassroots of racing and each racecourse is unique with its own traditions and history. It is laidback and a lot of fun with a great atmosphere of people coming together in the community. You can’t get much closer to the horses or the racing and it always throws up a few surprises.
